Walruses are good for you

My son doesn't turn two for a few more days but we had his birthday party this afternoon. Last year, I made him panda cupcakes and he wasn't too impressed. The adults loved them though. ;) This year, I really wanted to make him train cakes since he's so into Thomas and Friends but I wasn't able to get my hands on one of these trays so I resorted to the next best thing... walruses!

As I've mentioned before, my son loves to read. Now that he's reading some books in the age 3-5 category, he's come across more unusual animals. In some of his favourite books, Cars and Trucks and Things That Go, Best Word Book Ever, and Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend, there's an abundance of walruses. Their tusks are their most prominent feature and that's how he recognizes them. No surprise there! However, when he sees tarantulas (also in his books, not in real life) he thinks they're walruses, too, because of their large pinchers. Yikes! Hearing him say "walrie" everytime he sees one is so cute. Naturally, I had to make him these adorable walrus cupcakes!

When we went to the supermarket a couple of days ago and he got impatient, I told him that I was buying ingredients to make walrus cupcakes and he immediately calmed down. He was extremely excited and woke up every morning since then asking for "walrie" cupcakes. Heehee. Don't they look awesome in the double-decker carrier? The top view almost makes them scared to be eaten, doesn't it?

Well, everyone loved them! They really were almost too cute to eat but they were even more fun to make. When I was putting the tusks in, I started laughing so hard that my hands shook and I was afraid of ruining the snouts. As you can imagine, trying not to giggle was even harder. ;) The party was small and intimate but so wonderful. My son had a great time but he didn't eat his walrie.

Ah, you can actually hear them asking, "Where's my bucket?" These are just way too cute for words! I think I'd be like your son and unable to eat mine!! (and hooray for raising a reader!)

Happy Birthday to Li'l Leiphart!

Those walrus cupcakes are AWESOME! Glad your guy liked them, too. Have you and he discovered Hansel and Deisel or The Three Little Rigs? Given the other books you mentioned, I think he'd like them...
