Unity FWF Blog Hop with a Video on Finding Inspiration + How I Store My Unity! {May 27th}

Hello Friends With Flair! Today's card is a clean and simple one-layer using The Best is Yet To Be. After making today's card, I've used all but five of the stamps in this fabulous kit. Since I inked up the stack of mini teacups for the first time here, I'm adding this card to the All Things Unity Challenge #31: Stamps Never Used.

I forgot to take a photo of the inspiration for this card (a wine bottle) but you can see it in the video. :) I took the red and orange colours directly from the label and the sentiment is stamped in olive as a tribute to the colour of the glass. As explained in the video, I never fold my card before stamping since the crease will create an uneven inking, especially if the stamp goes off the edge of the card as it does here.

Over the past few months, I've had numerous questions and emails about how I come up with the ideas for my cards, in particular my Unity cards, and how I store my Unity so I hope this video will help explain all of that. I know there are at least two other video tutorials out in blogland about storing Unity but since I was asked specifically about how I personally store mine, I thought I would share that with you. {As I was finishing up my post, my husband came over to say goodnight. He saw the freeze screen of the video and said, "You put a wine bottle on the table in your video?!" When I showed him the card and explained it was my inspiration piece, he said, "Oh." Pink Cat Studio ~ May 26th Digi Release!

It's been four weeks since Pink Cat Studio has had a digi release but we're back with another bunch of cuties! I squealed with delight at the sight of these cats. They range from adorable to chic and cool. Plus they're perfect for those Father's Day cards you haven't made yet!

I used the Cat Father & Kittens to make this card for my husband. As soon as my son saw it, he pointed to all the kittens, giggling and squealing. Then he said, "I give that to Baba?" Total cuteness, I tell you! He was a bit upset that Father's Day wasn't immediate but it was really cute that he was super excited to give it to his Dad. It's obvious that I don't have three kids but my son is highly energetic and all over the place as quick as lightning. If you imagine him moving all around in the different positions as you read the sentiment, then the card is a perfect representation of my son and the way he plays with his Dad. ;)

CAS-ual Fridays Challenge #3: Bring the Bling

I was commissioned to make a birthday card for my cousin's son who turns one next week. I didn't intend for this card to fit into the CAS-ual Fridays Challenge #3: Bring the Bling but it ended up that way when I decided that the wheels from the flatbed train were too train-y for the pickup truck. The pieces are obviously from two different sets but I thought the flatbed train would work as a trailer for the truck and it does, sort of, right? I thought the big '1' on top of it looked like those advertisement trucks and, as a result, the bling ads to that whole 'look at this' flashiness of the card. After all, it's a big deal when a baby turns one, right? :) This is the first time bling has worked on a masculine card, for me anyway. This is also the first time I cut into my Basic Grey Oliver pad which I've had since December! The papers are adorable and I love how they were so easy to mix and match. And speaking of Basic Grey, have you seen the new Out of Print and Oxford collections with matching Hero Arts stamps? I am in big trouble when those are available to order!!!

Another Alteration, a RAK and a Blog Award

It's the Victoria Day holiday here so it's taken me only seven hours to finish this post. :Þ In my rare bit of spare time, I managed to do another alteration for my son because he loves certain images too much to part with. (You can see the previous one HERE.) He has a hard time when the seasons change and he can't wear the clothes that he's grown to love. This top was a gift from my sister but it was the wrong style for the wrong season at the wrong age so he never got to wear it. Sometimes that happens, right? My son loves his construction vehicles so I had to cut this one off the original Carter's sleepwear and put it in a BabyGap t-shirt he can enjoy wearing this spring and summer.

Next up is a card from my long-time friend, Bonita. I think Bonita has a ton more craft supplies than I do but she doesn't have a blog or a gallery. Can you believe it? I think work like this should be out there for all of us to enjoy! After months and months of trying to convince her to start a blog, Bonita says she's working on one. Even I had never seen her work 'til she sent me this card. Isn't it amazing? I hope you get your blog up soon, Bonita!! I think more than a few of us will be excited to see more of your work!

Happy, Leafy and Chevrony

Okay, chevrony is not a word but it could be. ;) When I saw Moxie Fab World's Chevron Chic Challenge, I wished I had bought Maile Belles' Chevron Stripes stamp set. Since I don't have it, I had to use her Modern Basics set. It worked perfectly when I realized that stitching into the centres and points of the leaves makes a chevron pattern! I used my go-to colours of the moment to make this clean and simple birthday card. After stamping, I stitched the chevron patterns with thread to match the yellow and turquoise inks, and rounded one corner to finish. I love how this turned out and I think I'll be making a few more of these to give away as a set!

Unity FWF Blog Hop {May 20th}

So yesterday, I claimed that I only had one Unity fruit stamp. That is true but I just had to figure out a way to make more fruit out of non-fruit stamps!!! This is where it paid off to have a catalog of all my Unity stamps. The instant I saw this border stamp from Dutch Mustard Soup that said 'thank you bunches', I wished I had a grape stamp. Then I saw the gumball machine and heart flower from Favorite Things/Rockin' It Unity Style and an idea was born. I didn't have the perfect green or purple inks to match the grapes so I double-inked in two different shades so the sentiment would be a better match. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

The Sweet Simple Things of Life

This one-layer card combines Unity's Toot Fruity Challenge and the All Things Unity Challenge #31 to use an uninked stamp. This apple from Take Time To Laugh is the only fruit stamp I have by Unity and I've never used it before. I paired it up with a sentiment from Favorite Things/Rockin' It Unity Style. I rock 'n' rolled the apple in two red inks and the inked the leaf in two greens to keep it from looking too flat. I've been seeing a lot of fruit (mostly melons) in the blogosphere made with the scallop punch and I thought I would use it here as a bite out of the card itself, rather than the image. I'd never seen this done before but that's not to say it hasn't been done before because someone must've thought of this already, right? Anyway, I think it looks quite cute. It reminds me of snack time before my son's naps when we're both munching on apples and reading books. When he was younger, I used to cut up his apples into slices but when he saw me eating a whole one, he asked me why I ate mine that way. Ever since then, my son loves to eat apples whole even if he struggles with it. It really is one of the cutest thing to watch! :)

Pink Cat Studio ~ May 19th Rubber Release!

Pink Cat Studio has released three new rubber sets and they're now available for purchase! These are the ultimate mini sets and there's something for everyone. I ♥ Paper Smooches

Finally, my mojo is back from its unannounced five-day holiday! LOL I needed to add some masculine birthday and thank you cards to my stash so I reached for my new Paper Smooches stamps. I love them more than I can say and you will, too! ;)

This first card uses the worm from Birthday Buddies. I paper pieced him with Echo Park's Little Boy Collection and I'm proud to say that it'll be the first patterned paper collection I will ever re-order! Can you believe that?! I've been proudly cutting into it and enjoying it every much.

Next up, I have a thank you card with a ton of gorgeous white space. Those of you who have been following my blog for a while know that I'll find a way to turn pretty much anything into a flower! Here, I used the plaid heart and acorn leaves from Falling For You. It turns out that five of those hearts fit perfectly together to make a flower which I coloured with my Copic markers. I love how they turned out and I love the giant hand-written sentiment from Pretty Phrases!

I'm including this second card as part of the Splitcoaststampers' CAS119 challenge to make a card inspired by the word 'gift'. I received a very nice gift recently so I will be mailing this to the sender. That's it from me today! Hopefully my mojo won't run off again and I'll be back soon. ;)

Unity FWF Blog Hop + CAS-ual Fridays Challenge #2 {May 13th}

Finally, Blogger is working again! I lost about 20 comments and some updates on my pages but I'm glad it's up again. Figures it was down when I actually had time to comment and I couldn't! It's amazing how many of us rely on it. I hope your week came to an end nicely the way mine did!! Yesterday, I had three cards picked up for Paper Crafts' Nov/Dec 2011 issue and, today, I found out that I won the first CAS-ual Fridays Challenge! WOW! Can I toot my own horn for a second? ;) Thank you so much for all your kind words and support. It means a lot to me!!

I had about an hour to play this afternoon so I used the time to make a birthday card for my neighbour's son who's turning two on Monday. I'm linking this card up to Unity's Friends With Flair Blog Hop and CAS-ual Fridays Challenge #2! I inked up the train from Boys Will Be Boys, fussy cut them and mounted them on foam tape. I placed Cappuccino baker's twine on the card base before adhering the trains to make it appear like they're all buffered up just like my son's wooden trains. I looped twine through the button holes before attaching it to the engine and then used a long piece of twine tied to the smokestack for pulling. The sentiment is from To the Moon & Back and the patterned paper is, of course, from Echo Park's coordinating set Little Boy.

My son got very upset with me when he saw this card and I wouldn't let him have it. Does that ever happen to you?! :) I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

HAPPY birthday 2 you

This card combines CAS-ual Fridays' Challenge #1 to use text and Papertrey Ink's Make It Monday #14: Selective Inking. I rarely make pink cards but this one called for it since the recipient loves pink and it's good for me to get out of my comfort zone occasionally. I knew I was going to use Background Basics: Text Style II because it's my favourite text set. I'm currently all over the new Alpha-blocks set and coordinating die so I had to use that, too. I also wanted to make more use out of a couple of older dies including the Edger #1 and By the Numbers.

First I trimmed my pink card base and die cut the bottom edge as well as the windows. Then I cut a 4.25" x 5.5" piece of white cardstock, stamped the text on the bottom and adhered it behind the front of the card. I stamped the sentiment across the top, using only part of 'birthday' and finished it off with a doodle-style butterfly. I stamped the Alpha-block letters inside the windows and text on the die cut '2'.

When I positioned the die cut two where I wanted it to be on the card, it obstructed too much of the 'd' and 'y' which didn't look good. Then it dawned on me that I could use the Outlines Alphabet set to create the illusion of the letters being finished! I'm totally loving this visual effect and will be definitely be using this technique again. To finish the card, I adhered the '2' with foam tape.

More Mother's Day Cards

Can you believe my husband made this card?! I can tell you that I was shocked. Shocked, I tell you! Shocked. My jaw hit the floor when he handed it to me. I thought it was better than something I would make! Here's what he said, "I was inspired by THIS card (he goes into my stash and digs it out to show me). It was also the first time I used stamps that weren't Pink Cat Studio. Do you like my colouring? I wanted to use animals like I always do and I thought those two owls were like you and munchkin so I went with an all-bird theme. I felt so much pressure to make a great card so I hope you like it." Well, I didn't realize he was under so much pressure! LOL I knew it took him a week to make it and it was very cute when he would hide in a corner in the evenings and say he was working on my card. ;) Okay, he just walked by while I was choosing the photo and he casually says, "Hey, that photographed really well." Too funny.

A few hours before we were supposed to head over to my parents' place for dinner on Sunday night, my Dad called and asked me to make a Mother's Day card for him to give to my mom. Hello! I thought I was done with Mother's Day cards so I whipped up this colourful card (reds and pinks are a must with my Mom). I kept it one-layer because my Dad has complained about my cards being too bulky and thick in the past. (Insert eye roll here.) I just realized while blogging this post that both cards use the exact same sentiment. It's from one of my most used Verve sets, Because of You. All other stamps used in both cards are none other than Unity. The turquoise text in the olive vases is from Papertrey Ink. I won't be photographing my cards on patterned paper again because I find this blinding. I thought it would look good but it doesn't, at least not to me. Maybe I just picked the wrong paper! :Þ

This card uses the PDCC80 colours as well as Papertrey Ink's Make It Monday #13: Impression Plate Tricks #2 technique which super cool and addictive! I decided to add some ink to my In Bloom impression plate before running it through my machine for that letterpress kind of look. The die I used is the new Alpha-blocks die. To create a Mother's Day card, I made my own sentiment using the Alpha-blocks and Heart Prints stamp sets. In fact, this sentiment would work for any day you'd like to honour mom, right? :) I punched out the two hearts and stitched them on to the card for some dimension.

Unity FWF Blog Hop {May 6th}

Hello. :)

Most of my cards are simple and not very interesting nearly as intricate as this one. Then there are ones like this that I don't even know how to describe. I'm a harsh judge of most things in life, probably not the best trait to have. LOL It was a great talent to have when I worked full-time in the fashion industry and I'm being completely serious when I say that a lot of my inspiration comes from fashion. That's how this card came about. I was inspired by this Refinery29 ad:

Then I remembered Moxie Fab World's Tissue Paper Magic Challenge and I knew I had to use my Party Love stamp to recreate this photograph. I stamped and coloured only her upper and lower body with Copics. My son was watching me and asked why she didn't have a body. LOL Then I used some of the beautiful pink tissue paper that Donna had used to wrap the blog candy I won, pleated it at the shoulders and added rhinestones to hide the shoulder straps on the original image. I used two layers of the tissue paper so it wouldn't be too sheer, revealing the fact that this girl has no body!

The vintage wallpaper is Tea Time Toile and the floor and pieces for the hat are all Echo Park Paper. I stamped a sentiment from To the Moon & Back repeatedly on the patterned paper. The tissue tape was a last-minute addition.

During Take Two Week, I revealed (in THIS post) that I've owned the Two-Step Bird punch for ages and never used it 'til then so this would be the second time. I was actually punching out the leafy part for the girl to hold and the bird section flew out of the punch and landed upside down right next to my girl's head. It was a flash of accidental brilliance, if I can put it that way! It totally looked like a beret, especially in that gorgeous green plaid. I decided I would use the leaves as a hat trim and the flower sticker finished it off nicely.

As you can tell, I'm completely obsessed by this stamp even though I've only used it a couple of times. I sent THIS card to Angela Magnuson and I'm having another version published in Paper Crafts' Holiday Cards & More, Volume 6! I think I'm going to have to get more Suzi Blu stamps. ;)

A Special Birthday + Many RAKs

Wow, I thought I would've posted this much earlier but I'm sure you'll understand since it was my husband's birthday today. :) You would be shocked if I didn't use at least one bike on his card, right? I thought I'd make more use out of the three Hero Arts bike sets that I do have. Yup, I said three. Well, it's actually two sets, plus a single. ;) I love one-layer cards because they are the easiest for me to make and this 3.25" x 6.5" size is a new favourite of mine.

Today, I received a big box of goodies from Donna (see her RAK below) and one of the sets was Sassafras' Stitchery. I was so excited to have my first faux-stitching stamps so I put one of them to use immediately. I never use new stuff immediately. I usually have to admire them for days and think about how I want to use them. I've never used Sassafras anything before (I sense a new addiction) and I love these! Even my husband thought they were real stitches. He ran his finger along it and said, "Wow, cool ground!" and double-checked that it wasn't real thread. I wonder if he'll use it on my Mother's Day card? LOL

This next card is one that I helped my son make. For those of you who are new followers, Baba is the word for "Dad" in more than a dozen languages around the world including Chinese (many dialects included). We didn't intend on him using Baba but when he learned to talk, he said Baba instead of Dada and it stuck. In fact, I may have mentioned that my husband thinks it's really cool and wants to be called Baba so he can be in on that bit of my heritage. Also, my son bursts out laughing whenever I say the word "Daddy" in reference to my husband!

My son picked out all the cardstock and ink colours. I helped him do the die cutting and stamping of the vehicles but he used the track wheel all by himself. I love his attention to all the little details like colouring in the lights and buffers. Actually, he was very upset that the trains didn't have front and back buffers like his trains! I continue to be amazed by his fine motor skills. I asked him where he wanted the 'happy birthday' sentiment and he told me it also had to say 'to you, Baba!" He recently learned about exclamation marks and finds them fascinating. He told me I had to curve the sentiment up and down, up and down. It was so funny. My husband thinks it's so cute how he coloured in the 'B'.

Now I have a bunch of cards from blogland to share. I love getting cards in the mail! It's one of those little things that means so much and there's nothing like holding a card I've admired on the computer in my own hands.

Lindsey's embossed bunny is adorable and I love the clean and simple design of her card (blogged HERE). She included some stamped squirrel images and my first (squirrel) stamp from A Muse!

Angela's card is covered in gorgeous embroidery patterns and A Muse stamps (and a die) that I would love to own!

Erin sent me the most beautiful card using Core'dinations cardstock (blogged HERE). Her package of goodies included a bunch of Papertrey Ink's Tiny Tags die cuts as well as some beautiful Core'dinations cardstock just because I'd been admiring her use of it!

As mentioned above, I received Donna's blog candy as well as the most beautiful Lawn Fawn card (blogged HERE). The box was big, there's so much for me to play with and she even included a box of Hawaiian chocolates!! Oh my, are they ever delicious! Donna is the sweetest!!

Thank you, ladies, for all of your beautiful cards and goodies! I wish I had 48 hours in a day so I can play, play and play some more!! Speaking of mail, I need to get a few RAKs in the mail myself. ;)
