Jane's Doodles {Hello}

Happy Friday! I'm here to share another Jane's Doodles card with you. This one uses all but one of the animals in the Garden Friends set. I stamped them individually on white cardstock, coloured them in with Copic markers and fussy cut them. I wanted to make a collage but I couldn't figure out how to organize all the animals. That's when I called in my husband and he did it right away. I love that he's so good at puzzles. It's a very handy skill to have when cardmaking, too. LOL The animals needed a subtle background so I used the grass from Hero Arts' Whimsical Houses. The bee is the only one that I moved from the position my husband suggested, which was above the bird. I liked it flying toward the apple but that was the perfect spot for the sentiment so I popped the bee one level higher above the turtle's shell.

What are your weekend plans? Today, I have a lot of cleaning up to do to get the condo ready for showings again after the flood we had on Tuesday night. Then I'll be meeting Jen Wills for dinner and maybe some stamping beforehand if we have time! ;) Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!!

I Design for Lil' Inker Designs!

I'm so excited to announce that I'll be designing for Lil' Inker Designs! As you all know, Laura Pryor, the owner of Lil' Inker is a 2011 Stamping Royalty winner and super talented. I noticed her company immediately when she released her first three sets with graphic designer Ariana Grant. When Laura appointed Julie Ranae as her design team coordinator, a spot on the Lil' Inker team was even more desirable. Thank you for letting me be a part of this incredible team!

I wanted to use the Pinwheels die and stamp set for my design team debut because I've never seen anything like it. It's absolutely adorable and I had so much fun die cutting all the blades! I panicked a little when I realized that I didn't have any wooden sticks or skewers for my pinwheel. Then I was relieved to find that the flag pole from Sentiment Flags works wonderfully. What a great way to mix-and-match sets!

All of the patterned paper on this card, including the dark grey that covers the entire front of the card, is from Echo Park's Be Mine Collection. I hadn't planned on the post for the pinwheel being in the same spot as the vertical ledger lines on the paper but it worked out perfectly! The punched hearts were made with two different punches and I used an Iron Orchid Designs stamp to add pink text to the light grey side of the pinwheels.

What I love most about the Pinwheels set is the versatility of both the die and the sentiments. The pinwheels themselves can have as many or as few blades as you want and the sentiments will work for a lot of other wind-related images. The die cuts flawlessly and the letters stamp clearly in all types of ink. Run, don't walk, to the Lil' Inker store and grab Pinwheels for yourself because I guarantee you'll have endless fun with it!

You Have Great Taste

You have great taste. Whether you're talking fashion or monsters trying out different looks, it's a great line, right? I got some new Paper Smooches in the mail today and I just had to ink them up. This is probably the fastest I've ever inked up new stamps! To be honest, I bought Vegtastic for the sole purpose of using the leaves on the vegetables as hats/toupees/wigs for the monster from Falling for You. I know, I'm a little weird that way. ;) I didn't buy Sugar Rush for that reason but the top of the cupcake looks like a shower cap, doesn't it? I can't stop giggling over that one. What I loved most about trying out these different looks on the monsters is that the little indentations of the 'tops' fit so well between the horns that it was almost meant to be! I used the white, pink, sunshine and chocolate colour combination from the Paper Smooches July Sparks Challenge. This challenge is so much fun and the prizes are amazing. You should play along!

I hope you're having a much better week than I am! Between the protests and overnight construction, I'm struggling to stay sane. All I can do is look forward to the peace and quiet I'll have in 38 days!! See you Thursday for an exciting announcement. :)

Sunshine and Smiles

I'm just popping in on this beautiful Sunday afternoon to share a quick and easy one-layer card using Hero Arts stamps. I used all of the Shoes as well as a sentiment from Sending Smiles Message. In my mind, I was going to colour all the shoes after I stamped them but they looked so good in black and white that I was literally afraid to ruin them by adding colour. This isn't to say that they wouldn't have look great in bright, summery colours but I really liked this clean and simple look so I left it. Unity Friends With Flair {Jul 22nd}

Hello, crafty friends! I'm having a fabulous day and I hope you are, too. I'm just popping in to share a sweet and simple card using Just Be You. This was actually a publication reject from ages ago that I wanted to re-work or re-theme but never found the time. As you can see in the close-up photo, the ladybug is layered and the body is made with The Twinery's Charcoal baker's twine. Since the colours fit, I'm playing along in The Play Date Cafe Challenge #91 to use black and white with a splash of colour.

I received the July 2011 Kit of the Month, Better Together, today and chuckled when my son pointed at the bees, ran his fingers across the rubber and said, "Ooooh, bees! Why (are) they always stripey?" Then he pointed at the rocking chair and said, "Hey, dondolo!" I was tickled when he said that because 'la sedia a dondolo' is rocking chair in Italian. :D

And one more thing before I go. Thanks to Angela Hathikhanavala who just got back from CHA Chicago, I was delighted to found out that one of the two cards I had published in Stamp It! Cards, Volume 8 made the big board in the Paper Crafts Magazine booth! It's the one that appears on page 142 of that issue and it also uses Unity, of course. ;)

Amber Ink 1st Birthday Blog Hop

I can hardly believe Amber Ink is already a year old let alone the fact that it's already been nine months since I was a Torchbearer! I've met so many wonderful and talented ladies and remember my Orange Torch predecessors well - Taylor Usry, Wendy Price, Sunghee Chon, then me. Wow! What an honour that I became a part of it at that point. Then I passed my Orange Torch to Angela Hathikhanavala who passed it on to Lindsey M-P, Meg Craig, Cheryl Gorka and so forth. What an amazing line up and I'm so thrilled to have been a part of it. The best part, of course, is being one of the alumnae and having the opportunity to join up with my girls once again for these fun blog hops!

My card uses Hostess with the Mostess, my favourite Amber Ink set so far. The first time I ever saw anyone feature uncoloured stamps on their cards was my Unity Guest Designer predecessor Julie Lacey and it seems to be quite popular now so I thought it was time to give it a try. This hostess is just detailed enough. I coloured in the fruit plate to tie in with the coordinating colours of the baker's twine accent. For the bow, I tied a regular bow, applied glue beneath the knot, waited for it to dry and then trimmed off the ends of the bow. I love how clean it looks without the tails!

Monster Birthday Wishes

I was in a Paper Smooches groove yesterday and ended up making this card as well so I've linked up both to the August Guest Designer Search. This one also uses patterned paper but I love that it looks completely different. I wish I could've bottled that groovy moment much like when I'm at the edge of the ocean, say, in Cinque Terre, Italy, and take it out to experience again whenever I need it. Wouldn't that be nice?

Yup, I made another 6.5" x 3.25" card. I love this shape! It's my go-to shape for some reason and it's brought me quite a bit of success while sublicating, too. ;) All the patterned paper you see on this card is from Cosmo Cricket's Joy Ride mini deck. A former co-worker ordered a bunch of birthday cards and I needed a few more hence the theme of this card. I hope at least one of her friends is silly. LOL I masked off the monster's arm and part of his body so I could add two out-stretched arms. I tied little knots before attaching the strings to the heart balloons because real balloons have knots! Both the monster and 'monster' sentiment are from Falling For You and the 'birthday wishes' sentiment is from Birthday Buddies.

Batty for You

Whoa. Am I allowed to say that about one of my own cards? :) Well, you all know that I don't have a strong relationship with patterned paper. I try but my usage of it has been sparse, some strips here and there or small bits of paper piecing. This card is covered in patterned paper. Plus it's kind of Halloween-y and I don't usually make Halloween cards unless it's for a design team requirement. Here's how this card came to be:

I only have three Paper Smooches stamp sets. After all the cards I've made, it gets so much harder to come up with something unique and unusual. I decided that I needed to use the bat from Falling for You because (a) I hadn't used it yet and (b) I'm extremely excited about Halloween this year because we'll be in our new house! So all that excitement made me pull out Basic Grey's Wander paper pad. I flipped through it and found the retro print pattern for the bat's wings. I knew it would be too much for the entire bat so I used the etched orange for the rest of its body. I picked a dark etched blue for the nighttime sky and die cut a scary tree to use as a branch. Originally, I didn't think to put in the buildings but after flipping through the pad one more time, I thought they'd look pretty cool, especially since I live in the city. Since the paper pads are only 6" x 6", I had to trim off a quarter of my card size but I compensated for it by overhanging part of the tree branch by one quarter of an inch. So this card is kind of Halloween-y but not entirely. It has a lot of patterned paper, die cutting and heat embossing and I'm pretty sure I've never done all three of those things on a card before.

It was fun to push my own limits and create this card! What are your limits? What would you love to be able to do more of in paper crafting or life in general?

A Speedy Recovery

As mentioned in THIS post, I met Lindsey earlier this month and we collaborated on a get well card for Angela's kitten, Simon, who broke his leg. Pink Cat Studio is on vacation for the entire month of July so this is a little reminder that there are a lot of fun and versatile digi and rubber stamps available for your crafting pleasure! Lindsey was the one who chose this image of Cool Cat which was originally released for Father's Day. Since Simon's right hind leg was broken, the cane was in the perfect position and since Simon had a green gauze, I used Honeydew and Peapod baker's twine to wrap that leg. I did the Copic colouring and fussy cutting while Lindsey did the stamping and adhering. It was a lot of fun to make a card together for our wonderful bloggy friend Angela! We hope Simon likes it, too. Check out all the sweet photos and layouts of Simon on Angela's blog, Paper Cupboard! You're sure to squeal over his cuteness. ;)

Someone please stop me! I'm supposed to be relaxing but I can't stop blogging! LOL My new Hero Arts Shoes set was begging to be inked up so I just had to make this card using the Color Throwdown #150 combination which is perfect for the Hero Arts July Contest Summertime Theme. I bought the nesties used to make this card shape because I was inspired by my talented friend Donna Mikasa's cards here, here and here. I ended up with both Wonky Rectangles and Reverse Wonky Rectangles so be prepared to see a lot of both in the future. :Þ

I learned something about making these frames during sublication (making cards to submit for publication). When they are embossed, they shrink so the edge of the white panel shows at the edges behind the frame. It looks a lot better if you trim a millimetre off all sides. I used the direct-to-paper inking technique on the flip flops and you can see in the close up photo how it leathered up the paper. I love how real the sandals look! I was going to fussy cut the flower and layer it but I got lazy. Everything else is pretty straight forward.

Do you like my new watermark? I bet you're not the least bit surprised to see another bike! I asked Unity's Lisa Arana create it for me. She is so talented and sells a lot of super cool watermarks. I only have about ten of them now. ;) Check out Lisa's blog HERE for more info!

Unity Friends With Flair {Jul 15th}

Do you remember Erin's Birthday Blog Hop? I had made a card with the wrong colours. Yes, the wrong colours. I was supposed to use red and kraft but there was not an ounce of either. To surprise Erin, I made her a second card and sent it to her. She received it on Wednesday so I get to show it to you now!

This card uses another Suzi Blu stamp called Party Girl and, yes, I will admit to buying four Suzi Blus with my last order. I've had so much success with them and I love using them! I stamped the image in brown and coloured 'Erin' with Copics before paper piecing her outfit with Echo Park's For the Record Collection. The background and banner were also cut from the same paper collection. The sentiment is from To the Moon & Back which I think has the most versatile sentiments of any Unity set. I love this set for both its images and sentiments!

Jane's Doodles {Welcome Baby}

It's my day on the Jane's Doodles Blog and I'm featuring the set Noah's Ark. I used the lion's face without the mane and turned it into a bear! I stamped, coloured and fussy cut five of them and adhered them on to flags to create a fun Welcome Baby banner. After attaching the flags to the cloud background, I used charcoal baker's twine to create little connectors which consist of double knots. They use the same concept shown in THIS post, about twine knot embellishments, except they are two knots side-by-side. Instead of trimming the ends off right against the knot, I left a bit of a fringe. Cute connectors? I think so. ;)

When my son saw this card, he just stared at it. Suddenly, he said, "Mommy! I want ice cream!" I burst out laughing. My husband came over and after a few seconds of absorbing the situation said, "Ah, the power of suggestion." LOL

Core Love

I'm so excited and honoured that Kim is featuring one of my cards on the Paper Smooches Blog today! You can find the original post for that card HERE.

Today's card is one I had made for the latest Paper Crafts publication call. I had altered it slightly since it had already been rejected once before. I won't be submitting again because a neighbour decided he wanted to buy it for his girlfriend whose birthday is tomorrow. Sweet!

The directions for this card are pretty straight forward. All stamps are from Falling For You. I paper pieced the apple with papers from Echo Park's Little Boy Collection. The heart was stamped on white cardstock with red ink, fussy cut and adhered to the apple. I mixed two sentiments to create the one shown on the card. My first version used the original sentiment 'love you to my core' that comes with the set.

We've been averaging one showing a day on the condo which is not too bad. We were so used to the crazy housing market that we endured for more than two years where there were about 80-100 showings a day on each house so this is very slow for us. As long as people keep wanting to see our place, we're happy with that. Thank you so much for all your good wishes! :)

It's one I made a little while ago (but hadn't blogged yet) for a friend of ours who's a bicycle designer and orders Christmas cards from me annually. In fact, you may remember them! I wanted his birthday card to be unique and these stamps from Bicycles and Essential Messages worked beautifully together. I die cut a separate ivory circle for the bike, stamped on it, then die cut the layers of grass and debossed the ring before putting the scene together. This card holds true for the daily rides my son enjoys but not so much for my poor aching ankles and knees. LOL

Yup, Meg made it for me because she was so happy that I finally bought a house! I couldn't be happier that it got her into the Top 20. Yay, Meg! Quick & Easy Birthday Invitations

I'm glad I made my son's third birthday invitations over the weekend because my mojo suddenly went on vacation again. I guess it's just as well. I could certainly use a vacation myself! I'm looking forward to approximately 60 days from now when I'm somewhat settled in my new house. It'll feel so good to relax on the back deck with a glass of wine. :) A year ago, we had hoped to celebrate our son's third birthday in a new house but that didn't happen. At least I'll get to celebrate my next birthday in the new house! And Halloween! And Christmas! Oh boy, am I ever excited. LOL

Okay, you came to see some cards, right? This is the first year I made invitations for my son's birthday and, for these, I inked up some fantastic Unity stamps that hadn't seen ink yet. I used two sets: Soirees and Such and Boys Will Be Boys. Everything but the tractor trailer (tanker) are from Soirees and Such.

I couldn't decide which colours I liked best so I made four each of two versions. Luckily, there was one extra because my son wanted to write his own invitation as soon as he saw them.

I told him that Mommy was going to write all the details and he said, "No, let I do that!" It's so cute how he says I instead of me. I don't know if that's typical but pronouns must be so confusing for toddlers. He then asked me what the words said and he started writing and singing, "Happy Birthday ... , Happy Birthday ... . Please come my party!" Also hilarious is how the prepositions are missing.

I wanted to figure out a new way to tie The Twinery's Cappuccino baker's twine on these cards and I let the design of the frame guide me. I punched two holes at the edge and weaved the twine in and out of the three sections until I ended up with two rows of twine in the middle section. I tied the twine in a knot at the hole on the left hand side.

Basically, I ended up with quick and easy one-layer cards with a baker's twine accent. These were really fun to make and I'm happy with the way they turned out. I will definitely make different variations of these in the future!

RAKs and Cars Kinder Eggs

Hello, friends! I'm stressed out to the max!! I keep wanting to craft but I don't have an ounce of energy which is also zapping my creativity. Even thinking about getting my supplies out is exhausting. I have some birthday cards that need to be made but I guess they're going to be a bit late. The reason is, as you know, the listing on our condo goes live tomorrow morning and we've been cleaning like crazy people all weekend long. I hope there's an offer in the first week so my daily routine doesn't have to change too much with people coming in to see the place. The restrictions on viewing times are short, too, such that my son isn't going to have his long nap and I definitely won't be able to craft which means I will only be able to craft at night which I do not enjoy! I don't like anything cramping my crafting mojo, if you know what I mean. ;) This past month, I was fortunate to receive three cards from talented blogland friends so I need to share them with you!

The first one is from Lai Yoke in The Netherlands. I received this card the day we found out our offer on the house was accepted. How perfect for the occasion!! I met Lai Yoke in the Hero Arts Flickr Group several months ago and we've been friends ever since! This second card is from Janna in Germany. I love that I'm receiving cards from all over Europe! ;) Janna made this card when she was a Guest Designer for Pink Cat Studio. I loved having her design alongside me!! It's a blur how Janna found me more than a year ago but I'm so happy that she did because we've been keeping a constant dialog. Janna's creativity astounds me and I love everything she makes. One little visit to her blog, Papiersalat, will have you going back again and again!

My last card is from one of my nearest and dearest blogland buddies, Lindsey. I love the cool design of this congratulations card for our house! We met on Splitcoaststampers in the Spring of 2010. She lives two hours north of me and we talk about everything. Literally. I got to meet Lindsey on the holiday weekend when she and her husband came down to the city for a concert! There were no photo ops, unfortunately, since Lindsey is camera-shy but I can assure you that she doesn't look like Calvin or Hobbes. LOL We sat and chatted and made a card for another one of our blogland friends whose kitten broke his leg. That collaboration will be blogged as soon as that card has arrived at its destination. Finally, I wanted to share this adorable little 'baby Lightning McQueen' as my son calls him. He came inside one of these chocolate Kinder Eggs that my husband found recently while grocery shopping! Isn't he adorable? I photographed him next to my son's 'real' matchbox version of Lightning McQueen from the Cars movies. The box says that two out of three eggs have a Cars character inside. The second one we opened had an airplane so we're hoping that the third and final egg actually has another car in it.
